Background

WPSU Educational Services staff consulted with teachers from a U.S. Department of Education-designated Blue Ribbon elementary school. These teachers expressed a need for interactive activities that reinforce their in-class teaching—specifically activities that support reading comprehension.

WPSU used the strategies outlined in the book 7 Keys to Comprehension: How to Help Your Kids Read It and Get It! by Susan Zimmerman and Chryse Hutchins, to create a collection of teaching tools emphasizing student literacy.

The collection includes:

  • lesson plans
  • handouts and worksheets
  • links to interactive activities

These materials are intended for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Each interactive activity is composed of three levels of increasing difficulty.

Educators can direct children to the level that they think is most appropriate. Each level has its own URL which can be embedded in a child's assignment. The activities can be used as an assessment after the lesson has been taught, or as practice at any time.
